Often, the right person for a professional firm's next hire is someone a good recruiter already knows. That is why RecruitHook looks at the people we have met, interviewed and stayed in touch with before we source a single new name.
It is not a shortcut. It is where the best information lives. After over two decades of recruiting and business experience, the most useful thing we have is not a list. It is what we know about people.
Why start with people a recruiter already knows?
Because a relationship carries context that a name on a list never will.
A purchased contact list gives you a name, a title and an email address. It does not tell you why that person left their last firm, what they turned down, what they are really looking for or whether they will take a call from a stranger. Most of them will not.
A known candidate is different. We have talked with them. We know how they describe their work, what kind of partner or manager brings out their best, and what would make them move. When a law firm, CPA firm or family office needs a controller, a senior associate or a tax manager, that context is what separates a strong shortlist from a long one.
Built from the front lines, not the boardroom, means exactly this. The value is in the conversations.
What does a known candidate have that a new name does not?
| A candidate we already know | A name from a purchased list | An applicant from a job board | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Why they might move | Usually known from past conversations | Unknown | Stated, but only for this posting |
| Will they take the call? | Likely, because they know who is calling | Uncertain | Yes, but they found you, not the other way round |
| Their track record | Discussed directly, often more than once | A job title | A resume written for the posting |
| Compensation expectations | Talked through before | Unknown | Sometimes shared |
| Fit with how your firm works | Judged by someone who has met them | Not yet judged | Not yet judged |
| Confidential searches | Can be approached discreetly | A cold approach | Usually means posting the role |
Is "someone we already know" just an old resume?
No. A resume is where the conversation starts, not where it ends.
Careers move. A senior accountant we spoke with years ago may be running a finance team today. A litigation associate may now be the person a firm wants as its next lateral hire. The resume tells us who to call. The call tells us who they are now.
That is also why a strong candidate who was not chosen for one search is not a lost relationship. Someone who was a close second for one firm may be exactly right for another. We keep those people close.
How does RecruitHook search its own relationships before the wider market?
For every search, the order is the same:
- Intake. We agree the must-haves, the nice-to-haves, the deal breakers and the compensation range with you.
- Our own people first. We look at candidates we have spoken with, people who were strong on earlier searches, and professionals referred to us by people we trust.
- A conversation, not a blast. We call the people who fit and ask what has changed. No one is put forward on the strength of an old document.
- The wider market. Where our own relationships do not cover the role, we source beyond them.
- A focused shortlist. You see a small set of candidates, each with a clear reason they are there, and each reviewed by a recruiter first.
When should a firm go straight to the wider market?
Sometimes our relationships will not cover a role. A specialty we have not recruited for before, a new geography or a very narrow skill set may need a fresh search from the start. When that is the case, we say so at intake.
Starting with the people we know is the default. It is not a rule we bend a search around.
What does this mean if you are a candidate?
If you talked with RecruitHook years ago, that relationship did not expire. Send us an updated resume and tell us what you want next. We will not send your details to an employer without talking with you first, and candidates never pay RecruitHook.
And if what you want next is not a job at all, that is a conversation we have too. Some professionals come to us asking about business ownership, which is where FranchiseHook comes in.
Frequently asked questions
Why would a candidate from a past search be right for a new one?
Because fit is specific to the role and the firm. Someone who was not the right hire for one firm may be the right hire for another, and we already know how they work.
Does starting with known candidates limit the search?
No. It changes the order, not the reach. When our own relationships do not cover the role, we go to the wider market.
Is my old resume still on file with RecruitHook?
It may be. The quickest way to find out, and to make sure we have the current picture, is to submit an updated resume.
Can you approach people without naming my firm?
Yes. Confidential searches start with people we can speak with discreetly, and your firm is named only when you are ready.
