At RecruitHook, a recruiter reviews your resume against the roles we are working on now and the kinds of roles we fill regularly. If there is a fit, we reach out, and the next step is usually a call with Nina Prall, our Director of Recruiting. Your resume does not go to any employer until we have talked with you first.

If there is no fit today, your resume stays with us and the relationship stays open. Careers move and so do our searches, so a resume that does not match this month may match a role we take on later.

What does a recruiter look for first?

A recruiter reads your resume with a specific search in mind. These are the things we check first, in order:

  1. The credential or experience the role requires. A bar admission, a CPA license, a practice area or a type of client is usually what a search is built around.
  2. Where you live and how far you would travel. Location narrows which roles are realistic for you.
  3. Your recent titles, and what you actually did in each one.
  4. How current the resume is, so we understand where you are today.
  5. Any note about what you want next, if you included one.

How can you make your resume easier to match?

Write your experience in plain words. If a firm needs someone with trusts and estates experience, no-fault insurance defense work or month-end close for a construction company, those words need to be on the page. We put a candidate forward only when the experience a role requires shows up in their background, so experience you have but did not write down is hard for anyone to see.

  • Name your practice areas, industries and the kinds of clients you served.
  • List licenses and bar admissions with the state.
  • Say what you did in each role, including the type of work and the volume where it helps.
  • Keep your LinkedIn profile consistent with your resume.
  • Include a phone number and an email address you check.

What do we talk about on the first call?

The first call is about you as much as any single job. We usually ask:

  • What you want in your next role, and what you would change about your current one
  • Why you are open to a move, and how soon
  • The compensation you are looking for
  • How far you will commute, and whether you need hybrid or remote days
  • Anything that would rule a firm out for you

We also tell you what we are working on, which roles we think fit and which ones do not. If a role would be a stretch, we say so, because a move that does not suit you is a poor outcome for everyone involved.

What if there is no role for you right now?

Then we keep in touch. RecruitHook holds approximately 200,000 historical resumes, and when a new search starts, we look at the people we already know before we look anywhere else. Send us an updated resume when something changes, such as a new title, a new license or a move.

Some professionals tell us that what they want next is to own a business. We have that conversation too, through FranchiseHook, which is part of the same Hook Alliance relationship.
