Start with your own answers on six things: the role you want as an owner, how you like to work with people, your top priority, your available capital, your location and your interests. Then measure every brand against the liquid capital you actually have, compare the models that remain, and choose the three that deserve a deeper look.
FranchiseHook has access to more than 600 franchise brands through IFPG. No one can evaluate that many properly, so the quality of your shortlist decides how useful the rest of the process will be.
What should you decide about yourself first?
Before any brand comes up, Mike Laufer works through these areas with every FranchiseHook candidate:
| Area | The question to answer |
|---|---|
| Owner role | Do you want to run the business day to day, or own it while a manager runs operations? |
| People | Are you comfortable working with the public and leading a team? |
| Top priority | What must ownership give you: income, time with family, independence or something else? |
| Available capital | How much liquid capital can you invest, and do you plan to use financing? |
| Location | Where do you want to operate, and would you consider other areas? |
| Interests | Which kinds of work appeal to you, and which do you want to avoid? |
Be specific on the last one. Saying plainly what you do not want, such as food service, early mornings or a large staff, removes whole groups of brands at once.
The franchise questionnaire and the entrepreneurial assessment cover most of this in about ten minutes combined, and they give the first conversation something real to work with.
Why does liquid capital come first?
Every franchisor sets its own liquid capital requirement and publishes an estimated total investment. Measuring each brand against the liquid capital you have today sorts the field faster than anything else. Mike places each brand in one of four positions:
- Comfortable fit. Your liquid capital sits above what the brand asks for.
- At the line. You meet the brand's requirement with little room to spare.
- At the line, financing needed. You meet the requirement, and the larger project depends on financing.
- Above current liquid funds. The brand asks for more liquidity than you have today.
A brand in the last group needs a clear funding plan, agreed with your financial advisor, before it belongs on your shortlist. Each brand's FDD shows its estimated initial investment in Item 7, and that is the figure to check.
How do you compare the brands that are left?
For each remaining brand, look at three things: how the business works day to day, why it could fit what you said you want, and what to weigh against it. Every brand has a tradeoff, and a comparison that leaves it out is not much help.
The tradeoffs that come up most often:
- Home-based, or premises with a lease
- Serving consumers, or serving other businesses
- Running it yourself, or owning it semi-absentee with a manager
- Recurring contracts, or one-off jobs
- A younger, fast-growing system, or an established one
- One unit to start, or several
Popular categories include home services, senior care, health and fitness, food and beverage, pet services, and children and education. Knowing which ones interest you helps. Keep an open mind while you compare models, because the way a business runs can matter as much to your fit as what it sells.
Why choose three?
Three brands are enough to compare and few enough to research properly. Each one deserves introductory calls with the franchisor, a review of its Franchise Disclosure Document, conversations with its operations, marketing and training leaders, a financing conversation, validation calls with current owners and, at the end, Discovery Day. Doing that well for three brands is realistic. Doing it well for eight at once is much harder.
Choose the three that best match the work you want to do, the life you want to protect and the financial commitment you are prepared to make. The purpose of the shortlist is to decide which brands deserve a deeper look grounded in real evidence, well before anyone tries to pick a single brand.
Where does FranchiseHook fit in?
We do the narrowing with you. After the questionnaire and a discovery conversation, we present a focused set of brands that fit your answers, each with the reason it is on the list and what to weigh against it. You pick the brands you want to pursue, and we make the introductions.
Our approach is shaped by hundreds of franchise discovery conversations. FranchiseHook is not tied to any one brand, and deciding that none of them fit is a perfectly good outcome.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know which industry I want before we talk?
No. Being clear on your goals, your budget and how involved you want to be matters more. The right industry can follow from those answers.
Can I see the full list of brands?
We share the brands that fit your answers, each with the reason it is on your list, after we have talked through your goals. That keeps your time on brands worth considering.
What if none of the brands fit?
Then we tell you. Deciding not to buy a franchise is a good outcome, and we would rather say so than push a poor fit.
Does the shortlisting cost me anything?
No. FranchiseHook is 100% free to you. Franchisors cover our fee.
